across warty browning vineyard,
beyond utility tower lines, across the highway,
the crest of Jonn’s wilderness hill—reforested,
headlights, red roofs, water tanks.

in the morning
for hours
rising up like a wall—
chicken voices
startled to be alive again
white and red in cinder block rows
like the crowd of ghosts here—not unfriendly—
just many,
just preoccupied
with one life that ended
